#DIY Exfoliating Coffee Body Scrub

This is the simplest exfoliating body scrub you'll ever #DIY. 

Ingredients:

1 Cup (Fresh or Used) Coffee Grounds
1 Cup Raw Sugar
1/2 Cup Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil
2-3 drops of  Essential oil of your choosing (optional)

Note: Leave the used coffee grounds out to dry before using them in the mix. You don't want excess moisture in your scrub.
 

Recipe:

Place coffee grounds and sugar in a mixing bowl and pour the coconut oil over.
Mix well and transfer to an airtight container (This helps keep the scrub fresh for a longer period of time)
Add in essential oils if you'd like added fragrance. I'd recommend a minty or citrus flavour as these go best with the coconut oil which is the dominant scent in this concoction.

Use on your entire body for great exfoliation and rinse off with a natural bodywash product after.
(The optimum shelf life for this is about 3-4 weeks. But can be kept longer if you're not fussy)

Exfoliating is one of the most important parts of any beauty regime. Exfoliating removes dirt, dried sweat, and air pollutants that latch on to our skin as we go through our day-to-day activities. To exfoliate the whole body, using a body scrub is the best way. It helps to remove dead skin flakes from the skin and encourage growth of a smooth new skin layer.

Coffee and coconut oil are packed with antioxidants that are very beneficial to our skin. Aside from its ability to increase circulation – which can help smooth the appearance of cellulite – the caffeine in coffee has been tied to a the ability to breakdown fat cells. Once the skin is exfoliated, it is primed for better absorption of moisture. Coconut oil is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and is an excellent moisturiser that can penetrate skin better than other oils.

The rough texture of the coffee and sugar granules help slough away dead skin cells, leaving you with softer, younger looking skin.


Personal Experience:

I've always been plagued with in-grown hair (from shaving) and red bumps on my thigh and legs. I've spent loads of money and tried aftershave creams, commercial exfoliators, and even laser treatments, but I've never been able to rid of them. Came across this recipe online and after doing a bit of research on its benefits, I decided to give it a go since I already have all the supplies in my kitchen. I use it 2-3 times a week in the shower and I've noticed the redness has disappeared and the in-grown hair situation has improved tremendously. I'm also terribly bad (lazy) with moisturising after shower/before bed, so I have really dry skin. This scrub was perfect since the coconut oil acts as a moisturiser and I don't need to use a separate product to moisturise after. This recipe saves me money from buying commercial products and is effective to boot. Winning on all levels!
